The main purpose of thickeners used in the drilling industry is to give the drilling fluid certain rheological characteristics and help it keep appropriate viscosity and flow limit, ensuring good performance of it’s basic function – effective drill cuttings elevation. The right selection of a thickener – cooperative with other drilling fluid components- is vital and allows to align the viscosity of the drilling fluid with personal needs. Natural thickeners are based on carbohydrates such as cellulose. Such biopolymers are water-soluble and used in water scrubbers – also to filter and stabilize viscosity of the drilling fluid.
